IMD predicts pre-monsoon showers across India in May

India is expected to witness pre-monsoon showers with above-normal rainfall forecast across the country in May. Rains are expected in sub-Himalayan West Bengal regions, Sikkim and Northeastern states this week, as per the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).
Significantly, India’s weather will shift from early summer conditions to above-normal rainfall in May, which is expected to exceed 110% of the Long Period Average (LPA), as per the IMD. The Met Department also predicts the conditions may ease heatwave stress, but chances of flooding and crop damage remain in several regions due to prediction of heavy rain.
Data from 1971 to 2020 suggests, the LPA has stood at 64.1 mm in India. Whereas, this year's projection suggests that most regions will receive normal to above-normal rainfall, which will provide relief from temperatures and potentially ease early-season heatwave conditions.
However, the IMD has also forecast uneven distribution of rain as parts of east and northeast India may receive below- normal rainfall.
Currently, IMD has warned of intense weather activity in several Sub-Himalyan regions of West Bengal and Sikkim along with the Northeast. It stated on X, “Fairly widespread to widespread rainfall expected across Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim & Northeast India this week.” Heavy rainfall with thunderstorms, lighting, gust winds speed of 40-60kmph has also been predicted in several regions.
The IMD has also flagged an increase in heatwave days in specific regions, particularly along the foothills of the Himalayas, parts of the east coast, and in Gujarat and Maharashtra, even as the broader temperature outlook remains moderate.
