IIT placements decline by 10% in 2023-24: Parliamentary panel report

A report by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on higher education highlighted a 10% drop in IIT placements in India between 2021-22 and 2023-24.
During discussions, the panel stated that various factors contributed to the decline, such as students opting for higher studies or pursuing startups.
The panel noted that while placements are entirely dependent on market trends, the department should investigate the reasons behind the drop in campus placements, reports suggest.
As per the report, IIT Delhi saw a 17% decline in placements in 2023-24 compared to 2022-23. In 2022-23, 89.88% of students were placed from campus, whereas in 2023-24, only 72.81% secured placements, indicating a significant drop.
Similarly, IIT Roorkee experienced an 18% decline in campus placements in 2023-24, with 79.66% of students placed compared to 97.76% in the previous year.
The government has termed this decline as unusual and has directed the department to investigate the causes and take necessary corrective measures.
