Spiking prices of tomatoes and vegetables has impacted everyone across the country. Retailers and consumers have been worst hit by this price hike.  Restaurant and hotel chains have found ways to combat the concerns around these hikes.

Some of the restaurants have literally been chopping off tomatoes from their ingredients temporarily. Fast food giant McDonald’s has stopped including tomatoes in their burgers during this brief period as well.

The supply-demand saga of surging prices

Many cities experienced heavy to very heavy rainfall in the first phase of the monsoon cycle. Additionally, cyclone Biparjoy caused devastation in many agriculturally rich areas of the states that it affected. Green vegetables imported from Nashik, Hyderabad, and other states experienced a dip in supply. This has resulted in an exponential demand rise for these commodities and a classic case of spiked prices of vegetables has spread across the country.

Restaurants and hotels revise their menus

Tomatoes have become as costly as ₹200 per kg in India, and their price stands at almost ₹180 per kg in Gujarat, while prices of many green vegetables are currently booming. Prices of important ingredients like ginger, capsicum, methi, among others  have reached sky high prices as well. In  wake of this, restaurant-hotel owners have revised their prices and menus as well. While many restaurant owners have hiked the prices of their food items like pulao, vegetarian biryani, and salads, the international burger chain McDonald’s has stopped adding tomatoes to their burgers for a temporary period.

Restaurants have also stated that their outlets are experiencing a dip in customers amid the hiked menu prices.
