Harbhajan Singh files petition in court over withdrawal of security by Punjab government

Former Indian off-spinner and Rajya Sabha MP Harbhajan Singh has a filed a petition in Punjab and Haryana High court against ṭhe withdrawal of his security cover by the Punjab led AAP government. The court has reportedly issued the notice to the center and state government and sought responses.
In the petition, Harbhajan Singh has reportedly questioned the withdrawal calling it ‘arbitrary’ and alleged that it was carried out without any fresh threat assessment or prior notice. He also sought the action against a mob that allegedly attacked his residence and wrote ‘gaddar’ (traitor) outside his house. He also alleged that this decision was politically motivated.
This plea is filed after Punjab Police has withdrawn Singh’s security soon after he exits from AAP with 6 other MPs and joined the BJP. This decision triggered after protests broke out near his residence. After the government withdrew Singh’s security, following which the central government provided him CRPF protection.
While hearing the matter, the high court has reportedly issued the notice to the Punjab-led AAP government and the centre and sought their responses.
The court directed authorities to ensure the safety and security of Harbhajan Singh and his family members until further proceedings in the case.
The court reportedly also asked the Punjab government to clarify the action taken in connection with the protest incident that happened outside Singh’s house.
The next hearing is scheduled on May 12.
