A second-year BTech student died after jumping from the fourth floor of his Greater Noida hostel early Saturday, following a reprimand for consuming alcohol, police stated.

The student, identified as Udit Soni from Jhansi district, was declared dead at a nearby hospital after the incident.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Sudhir Kumar told the media  that the incident occurred after Soni returned to his hostel in Knowledge Park 3 on Friday night with his two friends, identified as Chetan and Kuldeep, after consuming alcohol.

The hostel management reprimanded the student for his behaviour and also sent a video of the incident to his father, Vijay Soni, Kumar said.

As per reports, after receiving the video, Soni’s father contacted him, scolded him, and threatened to bring him back home from the hostel. Officials said the student was reportedly distressed following the reprimand.

Disturbed by the sequence of events, the student jumped from the fourth floor of the hostel, the police said.

Family members of the deceased have reached the spot. The body has been sent for post-mortem after completing the necessary legal formalities.

Police said two persons have been taken into custody in connection with the incident, and further investigation is under way.
