Govt issues alert against unauthorised medical colleges, warns students going abroad

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued a strong advisory warning students, parents, and stakeholders against unauthorised medical colleges operating in India and dubious offshore medical programs.
In a circular dated May 19, 2025, the NMC emphasised that numerous medical colleges are functioning without its approval, misleading students by offering unrecognised courses. The advisory, signed by Dr Raghav Langer, Secretary of the NMC, urges students to verify the accreditation status of institutions before admission.
“Enrolling in a non-recognised college could render your degree invalid. Legal action will be taken against institutions violating the regulations,” the notice states.
What students should check:
Before enrolling, visit the official NMC website to verify whether the institution is approved.
Some colleges have been offering medical degrees without NMC’s sanction. These are illegal and subject to legal consequences.
Studying MBBS abroad:
Ensure the program is taught in English.
Confirm that the course includes a 12-month internship, as required by NMC for eligibility to practice in India.
Additionally, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has clarified that it does not directly allot admission to any student in a medical college.
