The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has announced an immediate nationwide ban on the manufacture, sale, and distribution of 16 Fixed-Dose Combination (FDC) drugs.

According to an official press release, the government decided to prohibit these combination medicines after finding they lack therapeutic justification and pose potential health risks to patients.

Why were these FDC drugs banned?

An FDC drug merges two or more active pharmaceutical ingredients into a single dosage (such as a single tablet or syrup).

The health ministry's crackdown targets 16 specific combinations across several major medical categories, including:

Dermatological preparations (topical skin creams and ointments)

Analgesic and antispasmodic medicines (painkillers and muscle relaxants)

Antibiotic-based formulations

The ministry emphasized that the continued use of these irrational drug combinations is not beneficial when weighed against their potential risks. The move is part of an ongoing government effort to ensure only safe, effective, and scientifically validated medicines remain on the Indian market.

Supreme Court order sparks review

The nationwide ban follows strict directives from the Supreme Court of India, which previously mandated a comprehensive safety review of FDCs available across the country.

In compliance with the apex court's orders, the Drugs Technical Advisory Board (DTAB) formed a specialized expert committee. This panel was tasked with examining various FDCs to identify irrational formulations that lack therapeutic justification or threaten public health.

Immediate enforcement and next steps

The health ministry has ordered all State Drug Controllers, regulatory authorities, and enforcement agencies to ensure strict, immediate compliance with the new notifications.

Furthermore, pharmaceutical manufacturers, importers, distributors, and healthcare stakeholders have been advised to halt production and take immediate corrective measures to align with the law.
