Gold, Diamond Jewellery Worth Over ₹1 Crore Seized At Kolkata Airport, One Arrested

Gold and diamond jewellery valued at more than ₹1 crore has been seized from a domestic cargo consignment at Kolkata’s Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International (NSCBI) Airport, with one person arrested in connection with the case. The recovery, which also included ruby- and emerald-studded ornaments, has prompted an investigation into a suspected smuggling network.

Jewellery recovered during cargo screening

According to police, the jewellery was detected during a security check of a domestic cargo shipment at the airport. Officials said the seized consignment contained gold ornaments worth over ₹50 lakh, while the diamonds and other precious stones pushed the total estimated value beyond ₹1 crore.

The consignment also included ornaments studded with rubies and emeralds.

Receiver arrested at the airport

The arrest was made after airport authorities and police became suspicious of a man who had arrived to collect the shipment. He was detained for questioning, following which the jewellery was recovered.

Police have not disclosed the identity of the accused. He has been taken to the NSCBI Airport Police Station, where he is being questioned.

“A person has been arrested with a huge quantity of gold and diamond jewellery. He is being interrogated, and a case has been registered against him. The investigation is focused on establishing the purpose of transporting these items and their intended destination,” a senior officer of the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate said.

Probe into possible smuggling network

Investigators are now trying to trace the origin of the shipment, identify its intended destination and determine whether a larger smuggling racket was behind the consignment.

Police are also working to identify those who instructed the receiver to collect the shipment and ascertain whether other individuals were involved.

Security stepped up at Kolkata Airport

Following the seizure, security measures at NSCBI Airport have been tightened. Authorities have increased surveillance and strengthened monitoring of both cargo movement and passengers as the investigation continues.

The Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate has registered a case and is continuing its probe into the incident.
