Goa Health Minister Vishwajit Rane issued a public apology on Monday after facing widespread backlash for publicly reprimanding a doctor at the Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC). The incident, which was caught on video, sparked outrage among the medical fraternity and political circles alike.

During a visit to GMC, Rane was seen lashing out at Dr Rudresh Kuttikar over alleged medical negligence.

Following the incident, the minister took to social media to apologise, stating that his emotions got the better of him and that he had no intention of disrespecting any medical professional.

In a detailed statement shared on Twitter, Rane acknowledged his inappropriate conduct, saying he deeply regretted the manner in which he addressed the situation.

His post read, “I openly extended my heartfelt apology to Dr Rudresh Kuttikar for the harsh words spoken by me during my visit to GMC. In the heat of the moment, my emotions overtook my expression, and I deeply regret the manner in which I addressed the situation. It was never my intention to undermine or disrespect the dignity of any medical professional.”

“Doctors hold a sacred and noble position in our society. They work tirelessly to heal, to comfort, and to save lives. I hold the highest respect for their contribution to our state. While I may have erred in my communication, my intent was always to ensure that no patient is denied timely care and that our public health system remains responsive and compassionate,” he added.

The Congress party also came out in strong support of Dr Kuttikar, slamming the minister’s behaviour. In a press statement, the party said, “There is no safety for doctors when a minister in power abuses a medical professional inside hospital premises.” The Congress also accused Rane of behaving "like a mad person" and misusing his authority.

Medical associations from across India have also rallied behind Dr Kuttikar. The Indian Medical Association (IMA-Goa) condemned the minister’s actions and demanded a transparent and independent inquiry.

They were joined by the Indian Radiology and Imaging Association (Goa chapter), which not only demanded a full public apology but also criticised the humiliation of doctors in an already overstressed public health system.

Furthermore, the Federation of All India National Medical Associations has written to the Chief Minister of Goa, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and other top authorities, flagging the minister’s behaviour as “erratic and irresponsible.” They have called for strict action and clearer boundaries to protect medical professionals from political interference.

These associations have issued an ultimatum: if no action is taken within 72 hours, they will initiate a nationwide protest in solidarity with Dr Kuttikar.
