G20 Summit updates: Prominent world leaders arrive in New Delhi

After US first lady, Spain PM to also miss the Summit due to COVID-19

G20 Summit Agenda (Day 1)

9.30 a.m.: Welcome of the world leaders at the Bharat Mandapam venue, where prime minister Narendra Modi will pose for a welcome-group photo with all the world leaders. 

10.30 a.m.: The first session of the G20 Summit will commence with discussions around the theme of ‘One Earth’. There will be lunch followed by the session.

1.30 p.m.: Bilateral talks will be held.

3.00 p.m.: Another session on the theme ‘One Family’ will be conducted.

7.00 p.m.: A dinner hosted by the president, Droupadi Murmu, after a welcome photography session.

9.10 p.m.: Dignitaries will gather in the Leaders’ Lounge at Bharat Mandapam, from where they will head back to their respective accommodations.

G20 Agenda of Sept 10 (Day 2)

8.15 a.m.: Arrivals of world leaders at Rajghat and a signing (signature) of the peace wall inside the Leaders’ Lounge at Rajghat.

9.00 a.m.: A wreath-laying ceremony at Mahatma Gandhi Samadhi is followed by a programme of devotional songs.

10.15 a.m.: Tree planting ceremony at South Plaza in Bharat Mandapam.

10.30 a.m.: The third session of the summit called ‘One Future’ will take place, followed by the adoption of the Leaders’ Declaration in New Delhi, concluding the Summit.

12.30 p.m.: Some bilateral meetings and seeing off the guests.

Prime minister Narendra Modi and US president Joe Biden are holding talks at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg in Delhi. Their discussions include a wide range of issues and will further deepen the bond between India and USA.

Prime minister Narendra Modi met Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina and Mauritius PM Pravind Kumar Jugnauth in two separate bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Delhi this evening.

The guest list expanded as the prime minister of Japan, Fumio Kishida, and UN secretary general António Guterres arrived in New Delhi.

The deputy prime minister of Oman, Sayyid Asa'ad bin Tariq Al Said, and the president of the Republic of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, arrived in India.

The chairperson of the African Union, president Azali Assoumani, and PM of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina were welcomed in New Delhi. 


With the G20 Leader’ Summit scheduled to commence from Sept 9, prime minister Narendra Modi will hold bilateral meetings with more than 15 world leaders, sources said.

In the latest development, Spain’s president Pedro Sánchez on Sept 7 tested positive for COVID-19. As a result, he will not attend the G20 Summit.

Informing on social media on Sept 7, he said, “This afternoon I tested positive for COVID and will not be able to travel to New Delhi to attend the G20 Summit. I am feeling fine.”

He further added that Spain will be represented by the first vice president and minister of economic affairs and the minister of foreign affairs, EU, and cooperation.

The leaders of Spain were welcomed in New Delhi today.

Meanwhile, UK prime minister Rishi Sunak has landed in New Delhi.

Different delegates, many meetings

The PM will hold bilateral meetings with leaders of Mauritius, Bangladesh and the US at his official residence, 7, Lok Kalyan Marg today. 

He will hold bilateral meetings with the UK, Japan, Germany and Italy on Sept 9. 

On Sept 10, he will hold a working lunch meeting with French president Emmanuel Macron. 

He will do a pull aside meeting with Canada and bilateral meetings with Comoros, Türkiye, the UAE, South Korea, European Union and European Commission, Brazil and Nigeria, sources informed further. 

Which leaders will arrive today for the G20 Leaders’ Summit?

US President Joe Biden will arrive in New Delhi at around 7 p.m. today to attend the two-day G20 Leaders’ Summit scheduled to begin on Sept 9, official sources said.

This is Biden’s first trip to India after taking office as president in Jan 2021. He left the US for Delhi on the night of Sept 7 (US time).

On Sept 4, US first lady Jill Biden had tested positive for Covid, following which the president was also tested for the virus for two days.

Besides Biden, China’s premier Li Qiang, UAE president Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni will also arrive in the national capital today.

The Chinese premier is expected to land by 7.45 p.m.

French president Emmanuel Macron, Australian prime minister Anthony Albanese, German chancellor Olaf Scholz, Japanese prime minister Fumio Kishida, Brazilian president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina will also be arriving for the Summit.

Moreover, South African president Cyril Ramaphosa has also confirmed his visit to India for the G20 summit, sources informed.

Developments before the Summit

Ahead of the G20 Summit, the member nations of the grouping had agreed to grant permanent membership to the African Union, a continental body of 55 member states.

With this, the African Union has earned the same status as the European Union.

The G20 grouping comprises Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the UK, the US and the European Union.
