The first day of G20 Summit concludes in India
As the G20 Summit embarked on Indian soil today, a consensus was reached and New Delhi G20 Leaders’ Summit Declaration was adopted.
What is New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration
The Declaration mainly talks about global issues pertaining to,

- Sustainable development
- Multilateral Institutions
- Technological transformation
- Gender equality
- Countering terrorism
India’s G20 sherpa, Amitabh Kant, shares the focus areas of the New Delhi G20 declaration on X.
Congratulating the sherpas and ministers, PM Modi today reportedly said, “I have received good news. Due to the hard work of our team, consensus has been built on the New Delhi G20 Leaders’ Summit Declaration. My proposal is to adopt this leadership declaration. I announce that I will adopt this declaration.”

African Union becomes a G20 member
The African Union (AU), which is a continental body of 55 member states, was made a permanent member of the G20 in today’s proceedings.
In his opening remarks in the morning, PM Modi invited the AU, represented by Chairperson Azali Assoumani, to take a seat at the table of G20 leaders as a permanent member.

Amid the heated debates going on in Bharat- India discourse, PM Modi’s country plate read ‘Bharat’ instead of ‘India’ at the Bharat Mandapam convention centre. This further fueled the discussions and hinted at a prospective name change for the country.
Global biofuel alliance
The global biofuel alliance is an initiative at a global level to take ethanol blending in petrol up to 20% or to develop another blending mix for climate security.
In his remarks in the ‘One Earth’ session, PM Modi said, “We are launching the global biofuel alliance. India invites all of you to join this initiative.”
Emphasising positive steps regarding carbon credit, a ‘Green Credit Initiative’ was launched in the same session.
G20 Satellite?
A proposal to launch ‘G20 Satellite Mission for Environment and Climate Observation’ was made by PM Modi.
He said that climate and weather data obtained from this will be shared with all the countries, especially the countries of the global south. India invites all G20 countries to join this initiative.
What does the New Delhi declaration say on the Russia-Ukraine war?
It has called for a “comprehensive, just, and durable peace in Ukraine” and urged member states to “refrain from the threat of use of force to seek territorial acquisition” or act against the territorial integrity of any state.
In the Delhi declaration, the G20 leaders said: “For the planet, people, peace, and prosperity, we note with deep concern the immense human suffering and the adverse impact of wars and conflicts around the world.”
It also read, “Concerning the war in Ukraine, while recalling the discussion in Bali, we reiterated our national positions and resolutions adopted at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) and underscored that all states must act in a manner consistent with the purposes and principles of the UN charter in its entirety.”
The declaration says, “The use or threat of use of nuclear weapons is inadmissible.”
