The firefight started after a joint team of security forces got an input about the presence of terrorists in that area and cordoned it off. At this point, the terrorists hiding there started firing, drawing retaliation from the security forces.

The encounter

According to reports, two terrorists were trapped in the evening of Nov 16 during the operation at Samnoo in South Kashmir’s Kulgam.

At smoggy dawn of today in Kashmir, the operation was resumed, and a fresh exchange of gunfights was reported between terrorists and security forces in the Budhal area of J&K’s Rajouri district.

“Joint operations by the Army and Jammu and Kashmir police are in progress at Behrote in Budhal, Rajouri District,” the Army said.

The social media handle of Kashmir Zone Police informed us that five terrorists were neutralised by Kulgam police, the Army, and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). The account also mentioned that operation in its final stage and area is being sanitised.

There have been a series of encounters between the terrorists and security forces across J&K in the recent past in which many terrorists have been eliminated.

According to media reports, this operation was carried out by the Army’s 34 Rashtriya Rifles, 9 Para (an elite special forces unit), police, and the CRPF.

Notably, 34 Rashtriya Rifle is the same unit from which fallen hero Mahipalsinh Pravinsinh Wala hailed.

Mahipalsinh Wala was one of the three jawans who were killed in action in an encounter on Aug 5. Wala was originally from Mojidad village in Surendranagar and was residing in Ahmedabad’s Odhav area. He left behind his pregnant wife and parents serving the nation.
