Five armed men looted gold ornaments worth an estimated ₹3-4 crore and ₹8-10 lakh in cash from a UCO Bank branch in Jharkhand’s Giridih district on Thursday, holding employees and customers at gunpoint.
The robbery took place around 1.40 pm at the bank’s Rajdhanwar branch, barely 100 metres from the local police station. The entire operation lasted around 20 minutes.
According to branch manager Rahul Kumar Gaur, five armed men entered the bank, with one of them wearing a helmet and standing guard at the main entrance. The other four, who had covered their faces, entered the premises and threatened employees and customers with guns.
The robbers forced the manager and bank staff to sit outside the vault. They tied their hands behind their backs and sealed their mouths with adhesive tape.
The gang then forced the manager to hand over the vault keys and open the strong room.
Robbers Escape With Gold and Cash
At the time of the robbery, two customers were inside the bank, while two others entered during the incident. The armed men overpowered and restrained all four customers.
After gaining access to the vault, the robbers fled with gold ornaments pledged by customers, estimated to be worth ₹3-4 crore, along with ₹8-10 lakh in cash.
Bank officials said they were still assessing the exact value of the stolen assets.
Before escaping, the accused damaged and took away the digital video recorder (DVR) connected to the bank’s CCTV surveillance system, apparently attempting to destroy evidence.
Police teams reached the bank after receiving information from the authorities and launched an investigation into the robbery.
Search operations are underway to identify and arrest the accused. Investigators are also questioning bank employees and eyewitnesses to establish the sequence of events.
The robbery, carried out in broad daylight barely 100 metres from a police station, has raised concerns over security arrangements in the area.
