Security agencies are on high alert after a fresh bout of violence broke out in Manipur’s Ukhrul district, disrupting a brief period of calm following months of unrest. Several houses were reportedly attacked and set on fire in Liton Sarekhong village, triggering panic among residents.

In response to the arson and escalating tension, the district administration imposed a curfew across Ukhrul and ordered a suspension of internet services for five days to prevent the spread of misinformation and maintain law and order.

According to reports, incidents of firing in the air were reported in the hilly areas, prompting several villagers to flee their homes and take shelter in safer locations. Authorities said the internet shutdown was ordered immediately due to the deteriorating security situation.

The violence was sparked after a person was allegedly beaten to death by a group of seven to eight individuals near the village on Saturday night. Efforts were made to resolve the matter through dialogue, and a meeting was scheduled for Sunday, but it did not take place, as per reports.

Subsequently, on Monday midnight, armed attackers allegedly set fire to houses belonging to members of a particular community. In retaliation, houses of the opposing community were also targeted, leading to further escalation.

Security forces have been deployed in the area, and investigations are underway to restore peace and identify those responsible.
