Election commissioner’s ‘shayari’ steals spotlight at Lok Sabha 2024 election schedule

Updated: Mar 16th, 2024

Along with the Lok Sabha elections 2024 schedule, there is something more that has become the talk of the town.

Amidst the Lok Sabha 2024 elections buzz, the chief election commissioner (CEC), Rajiv Kumar, surprised the watchers with his  shayaris (poems), injecting humour into the crucial presser.

While talking about the political campaigns and advising the political parties to avoid personal attacks and maintain decorum, Kumar quoted:

“Dushmani jam kar karo lekin ye gunjaish rahe

jab kabhi hum dost ho jaye to sharminda na hona pade”

(Feel the enmity but keep in mind that when we become friends, we should not be ashamed)

Further informing about the language to be used while political campaigning, Kumar requested to maintain harmony among the parties and use decent language. To this, he quoted poet Rahim’s doha:

Rahiman dhaga prem ka, mat todo chatkay,

toote to fir na mile, mile gaanth parijay

(Do not break the thread of love on an impulse. Just as a knot is formed while trying to tie a thread, in the same way, there is a knot in that relationship too)

Kumar concluded his speech to answer those who doubt the functioning of electronic voting machines (EVMs) and said:

Adhuri hasraton ka ilzaam ek baar hum par lagana thik nahi,

Wafa khudse nahi hoti, khata EVM ki kehte ho

(It is not right to blame us for your unfulfilled desires, your loyalty is not to oneself, and you find fault in EVMs)
