Drunk 21-Year-Old Crashes Innova Into Crowd And Scooter In Bhopal, Man Killed

A 35-year-old man was killed and his minor son critically injured after an allegedly drunk 21-year-old driving an Innova lost control and ploughed into people before crashing into their scooter in Bhopal’s Kolar area, police said.

The accident took place around midnight on Tuesday near Ankit Parisar, when Shubham Awasthi and his son Madhav were travelling on a scooter. The impact threw the father and son several metres away and badly damaged their scooter.

Driver allegedly pressed accelerator instead of brake

Kolar police station SHO Sanjay Soni said the accused was allegedly heavily intoxicated when the crash occurred.

According to police, the driver had reportedly borrowed the car from an acquaintance to attend a party. Soni said the driver allegedly pressed the accelerator instead of the brake, causing the vehicle to go out of control.

The Innova allegedly struck several people on the road before hitting the scooter carrying Awasthi and his son.

Liquor bottles found inside car

Police said an empty liquor bottle, another liquor bottle, disposable cups and condoms were found inside the vehicle after the crash.

The car’s airbags deployed during the collision, which helped protect the accused from serious injuries.

The crash triggered an angry reaction from people at the scene. Bystanders allegedly caught and assaulted the driver and damaged the vehicle before police arrived.

Officers rescued the accused from the crowd and took him into custody.

Father dies, son critically injured

Awasthi was taken to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead. His body was sent for post-mortem examination and will be handed over to his family.

His son Madhav suffered critical injuries and remains under treatment.

Police are investigating the accident and examining evidence and witness statements to establish the circumstances surrounding the crash, including the allegations that the accused was driving after consuming alcohol.
