DGCA may soon approve commerce, arts students to become pilots

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is considering allowing students who have passed Class 12 in the Commerce and Arts streams to become pilots, as per reports.
Until now, only students from the Science stream with Physics and Mathematics were eligible to pursue a career as a pilot in India.
However, in many other countries, students from any educational background can become pilots.
Several pilot training institutes have also stated that subjects like Physics and Mathematics are not essential for becoming a commercial pilot. They argue that individuals who wish to fly private aircraft or become personal pilots are not required to study these subjects, so the same flexibility should be extended to commercial pilots.
According to reports, the DGCA will draft the revised criteria and send it to the Ministry of Civil Aviation for approval.
Many experts reportedly also believe that the current requirement for studying Physics and Mathematics in Classes 11 and 12 is unnecessarily restrictive.
Officials commenting on the development stated that several changes are in progress and will be reflected soon.
