All India Students’ Association (AISA) president Neha Bora on Monday claimed that journalists protesting over alleged sexual harassment of three women journalists by police personnel had been detained in Delhi.
The journalists were among the protesters who gathered outside the Parliament Street police station, demanding an FIR and an investigation into allegations arising from the October 3 protest at Jantar Mantar, seeking Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation.
Journalists Detained, Says AISA
In a post on X, Bora claimed the protesting journalists had been detained at a Delhi Cantonment police station. She said a team of lawyers was in contact with them and appealed to lawyers who could reach the station immediately to contact her.
The detention claim came as protesters continued to press for an FIR into allegations of misconduct involving police personnel during Saturday’s demonstration.
CJP Alleged 17 Detained, Including Woman Journalist Alleging Molestation
Ratna Singh, head of CJP’s legal team, claimed that the woman journalist who alleged molestation by an ACP and the 17 people demanding an FIR had been detained.
Singh further alleged that some of those detained were assaulted by police, including two people who she claimed were “brutally beaten”.
She questioned why those demanding justice were being detained instead of the allegations being investigated.
AISA has also alleged that women protesters, journalists and lawyers were manhandled by male police personnel during the October 3 protest. The organisation claimed that several women complained of being groped by male police personnel.
What Happened At Jantar Mantar
One of the three women journalists alleged that Assistant Commissioner of Police Vivek Bhagat sexually assaulted her after she questioned the absence of women police personnel at the protest site.
Earlier, Delhi Police said it had received complaints from the three journalists and transferred the matter to the Crime Branch for a “fair and impartial enquiry”.
The Crime Branch is expected to record statements of the complainants and other people connected with the allegations.
