Delhi Police Promises Stringent FIR Charge Following CJP Stir Over Attack on Protester's Father

Delhi Police has promised to insert stringent provisions—including attempt to murder, the SC/ST Act, and POCSO—into an FIR against a man who allegedly assaulted a student protester's father, following a high-voltage demonstration outside Parliament Street Police Station.

The action came after members of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), joined by Azad Samaj Party chief Chandrashekhar Azad, Purnia MP Pappu Yadav, and the Indian Youth Congress, staged a sit-in demanding immediate action. The agitation was sparked by a viral video in which the accused boasted of escaping police custody due to influential political connections.

Political Pressure Mounts Outside Police Station

Protesters gathered in heavy numbers near the police precinct, raising slogans against official inaction. CJP co-convener Saurav Das stated that police leadership assured the delegation that charge sheets would be upgraded quickly to reflect the severity of the violence.

"The Additional DCP gave us a commitment that charges for attempt to murder will be added to the existing FIR," Das told reporters. He added that invocation of the SC/ST Act alongside Indian Penal Code provisions regarding non-culpable homicide and criminal intimidation would follow immediately.

The victim, identified as Sanjay, suffered head injuries requiring seven to eight stitches during the altercation at Jantar Mantar.

Threats to Victim's Family Trigger Outrage

Speaking at the protest site, Lok Sabha MP Chandrashekhar Azad highlighted the severe intimidation faced by the victim's family, noting that both Sanjay and his minor daughter have received persistent rape, acid attack, and death threats.

Azad questioned the alleged political interference that initially shielded the perpetrator, warning that equality before the law remains compromised when powerful figures intervene in criminal investigations. He cautioned that failure to act within the promised 72-hour window would lead to a larger encirclement of the Delhi Police Commissioner's office and the Union Home Ministry.

Purnia MP Pappu Yadav expressed sharp criticism over the law and order environment in the national capital, questioning the safety measures in place for marginalized communities, women, and minorities.

Police officials have formally received supplementary complaints regarding the ongoing threats to the family and maintain that further custodial actions will proceed under the updated statutory sections.

The controversy erupted after Swatantra Bhardwaj, who claims close ties with senior political figures, bragged on podcast and claimed that he had assaulted Sanjay Kumar during the June 23 demonstration at Jantar Mantar over national examination paper leaks. Bhardwaj claimed in the video that he evaded imprisonment because of his political connections, despite Kumar requiring hospital treatment for head injuries.
