Delhi-NCR Rain Chaos: Nearly 400 Flights Delayed, 26 Cancelled; Gurugram Advises Work From Home

Heavy rain and strong winds battered Delhi-NCR on Monday, triggering widespread waterlogging, long traffic jams and major disruption to flight operations, with nearly 400 flights delayed, 26 cancelled and 15 diverted from Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast more monsoon rain across Delhi-NCR and adjoining areas, while an orange alert has been issued for Gurugram and Faridabad amid the possibility of heavy rainfall.

15 Flights Diverted, Nearly 400 Delayed

Adverse weather conditions disrupted operations at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport, with 15 flights diverted, including three international services.

Of the diverted flights, 12 were sent to Jaipur, two to Chandigarh and one to Lucknow, according to sources.

FlightRadar24 data showed that around 397 flights were affected by delays, with the average delay at the airport standing at about 25 minutes. At least 26 flights were cancelled as heavy rain and poor weather conditions affected operations.

Gurugram Advises Offices, Schools To Allow Work From Home

In view of the heavy rainfall and the possibility of further disruption, Gurugram authorities have advised corporate offices, government and private schools and other institutions to allow employees and staff to work from home on August 25.

The advisory has been issued to reduce traffic congestion and allow authorities to carry out road and drainage repair work.

Residents have also been advised to plan their travel carefully.

Two-Foot Waterlogging on Sohna Road, 4-km Traffic Jam

Heavy rain led to waterlogging of nearly two feet on the service lane of Sohna Road near Islampur village in Gurugram.

The accumulated water severely disrupted traffic movement, triggering a traffic jam stretching nearly four kilometres as vehicles moved at a crawl.

The IMD has issued an orange alert for Gurugram and Faridabad, warning of heavy rainfall and possible rain-related disruption.

Delhi Roads Choke as Rain Triggers Traffic Gridlock

Several parts of Delhi witnessed severe traffic congestion following the downpour.

Heavy traffic was reported on MB Road near Sangam Vihar, particularly on the stretch between Vayusenabad and Sangam Vihar. Commuters travelling towards Delhi airport, offices and Saket Court reported being stuck for up to an hour.

A large neem tree also fell on Jail Road in Ashok Nagar in West Delhi, blocking the road and disrupting traffic movement.

Meanwhile, heavy showers around India Gate brought temporary relief from heat and humidity, with the monument and surrounding roads drenched by the monsoon rain.

Noida and Ghaziabad Also Hit by Heavy Rain

Heavy showers were also reported across Noida, including Sectors 16, 39 and 95.

In Ghaziabad, significant waterlogging was reported near the Industrial Area underpass on NH-9. Several cars and two-wheelers struggled to move through the flooded stretch, while some motorists stopped on the roadside and waited for the water level to recede.

The rainfall brought relief from the heat and humidity but caused delays for commuters and disrupted traffic across several parts of the National Capital Region.

More Rain Forecast Across North and Central India

The IMD has forecast further monsoon showers over Delhi-NCR and neighbouring areas. Heavy rainfall is also expected in parts of Uttarakhand, Odisha and Telangana.

With more rain likely over the next few days, authorities have warned of possible waterlogging and traffic disruption, particularly in low-lying areas.
