A 31-year-old Delhi man who left a restaurant saying he had an urgent meeting in Gurugram was allegedly murdered by his former colleague and her partner over a suspected financial dispute, with police later finding his body dumped in a drain. The victim, Yuvraj Singh Manchanda, was due to get married next month.
Yuvraj Left To Meet Former Colleague
On September 6, Yuvraj visited Lajpat Nagar market with his sisters to shop for his wedding sherwani. The family later stopped at Golden Dragon restaurant at around 4:15 pm.
After some time, Yuvraj told his sisters that he had to meet his former colleague in Gurugram and left the restaurant. His sisters returned home by cab.
The family spoke to Yuvraj around 7 pm, when he told them that he would be home by 10 pm. However, he did not return and his phone became unreachable.
On September 8, at around 4:16 pm, the family received what they said was the last WhatsApp message from him. His phone was switched off again afterwards.
Family Filed Missing Report
Yuvraj’s family approached the Lajpat Nagar police station and filed a missing person report on September 11.
The family later alleged that Gurugram police had found Yuvraj’s body on September 10 but did not inform them. They also alleged that details for identifying the body were not uploaded on the Zonal Integrated Police Network (ZIPNET) in time.
According to the family, the body was cremated by police on September 14, two days before they were informed about his death.
Under the applicable procedure, an unidentified body may be cremated after the required identification process and waiting period if the person cannot be identified.
The family has sought preservation and access to the post-mortem report, inquiry papers, photographs, DNA samples and Yuvraj’s belongings.
Ex-Colleague Emerged As Suspect
During the investigation, police found that Yuvraj’s last phone call was with a woman identified as Vats, his former colleague whom he had gone to meet in Gurugram.
Her phone was switched off, following which police analysed CCTV footage and technical data and conducted enquiries at the offices of Yuvraj and the suspect.
Vats subsequently emerged as a prime suspect. Police later traced a new mobile number allegedly being used by her and arrested her from Uttarakhand.
Her partner was also arrested in connection with the case.
Body Allegedly Dumped In Drain
During interrogation, the two accused allegedly told police that they had murdered Yuvraj and dumped his body in a drain near their house in Gurugram.
Police suspect a financial dispute to be the motive behind the alleged murder. However, Yuvraj’s family has alleged that Vats is withholding the actual reason for the killing.
The police investigation is continuing to establish the alleged sequence of events, the motive and how the murder was carried out.
Both accused have been remanded to five days of police custody.
