Delhi High Court on Tuesday ordered the suspension of former BJP leader Kuldeep Singh Sengar’s jail sentence. Sengar has been serving a life term in connection with Unnao rape case.

The court granted him bail while his appeal against the conviction is pending, making it clear that relief is temporary and subject to strict conditions.

Sengar was convicted for the sexual assault of a minor girl in a case that emerged in 2017 and later became one of the most controversial criminal cases in recent years.

Due to the seriousness of the allegations and concerns over political influence, the Supreme Court had earlier shifted the trial from Uttar Pradesh to Delhi.

In 2019 , a trial court sentenced him to life imprisonment after holding him guilty under rape and child protection laws.

While suspending the sentence , the High Court imposed several safeguards. Sengar has been restrained from contacting the survivor or her family and has been directed to stay away from their place of residence. Any attempt to violate these terms could result in cancellation of bail.
