Kalupur police have arrested two Delhi men for allegedly duping railway passengers by displaying bundles of fake currency notes, gaining their trust and persuading them to transfer money online.
The accused allegedly targeted passengers at railway stations by posing as people in financial distress. Police said they displayed bundles of currency notes to convince victims that they had money, before asking them for financial help.
In some cases, the accused allegedly took advantage of victims after offering them tea and stole mobile phones and gold ornaments.
Passenger Duped of ₹77,000 at Kalupur Station
The case came to light after Maharashtra-based electrician Jayprakash Tiwari arrived in Ahmedabad with a worker for a job. After completing the work, he went to Kalupur railway station on September 7 to board a train to Maharashtra.
While waiting for the train, a man approached Tiwari and introduced himself as Rajesh Yadav. He allegedly claimed that his employer had assaulted him and withheld his wages.
The man told Tiwari that he had ₹2 lakh with him and showed him what appeared to be a bundle of currency notes. He then allegedly said that he did not even have money to buy tea.
Feeling sympathetic, Tiwari offered to buy him tea. During this time, another man joined them, and the two allegedly took Tiwari for tea.
Police said Tiwari began feeling drowsy after consuming the tea. The two men allegedly took advantage of his condition, stole his gold chain and mobile phone and persuaded him to transfer ₹77,000 online.
The accused then allegedly fled from the spot.
After realising that he had been cheated, Tiwari approached Kalupur police and lodged a complaint.
Two Suspects Arrested From Delhi
Acting on the complaint, Kalupur police arrested the two suspects, identified as Tanveer Ansari and Sanjay Sharma, both residents of Delhi.
Police recovered two mobile phones and ₹1 lakh in cash from Ansari. Another ₹4,800 was recovered from Sharma.
According to police, both men have previously been involved in pickpocketing cases in Delhi.
Investigators said the accused would identify potential victims, approach them while pretending to be in distress and display bundles containing fake currency notes to gain their confidence.
They would then allegedly persuade victims to transfer money or take advantage of distractions to steal valuables.
Police Probe Similar Railway Station Cases
Police suspect the accused may have targeted other passengers using the same method.
Investigators are checking whether the duo was involved in similar incidents at railway stations in Ahmedabad and other cities.
Police also alleged that the accused had become involved in online gaming and committed such offences to arrange money for it. The investigation is continuing to establish the full extent of their activities.
