A 24-year-old delivery executive died on October 20 after allegedly consuming a poisonous substance, more than two weeks after he was assaulted during a dispute over a torn ₹10 note in east Delhi’s East Vinod Nagar. Police have arrested two men and added a charge of abetment of suicide to the case.
The incident took place on the night of October 4, when the delivery executive, Sameer Hussain, went to deliver coffee to a customer. According to police, Hussain had called the police control room, alleging that he was assaulted after objecting to receiving a torn ₹10 note as part of the payment.
Dispute Over ₹10 Note
In a video recorded during the investigation, Hussain recounted his version of the incident. He said the elderly customer took around 10 to 15 minutes to arrange the payment before handing him cash that included a torn ₹10 note.
When Hussain objected, the customer allegedly told him to “take it or leave it”. Hussain said he offered to cancel the order and questioned why it had been placed if the payment could not be made properly.
He alleged that the customer abused him before another man arrived and slapped him several times. The second man also allegedly mocked him over his middle-class background.
Delivery Executive Dies After Hospitalisation
Police said they later received information that Hussain had allegedly consumed a poisonous substance. He was admitted to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital on October 5 and died on October 20.
A medico-legal case was prepared shortly after midnight on October 5, and an FIR was registered at Kalyanpuri police station the same day.
Following his death, police added Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with abetment of suicide.
Two Men Arrested
The arrested men have been identified as Rakesh alias Bunti, 30, and Rampal Singh, 65. Police are investigating the alleged assault and the circumstances surrounding Hussain’s death.
