Delhi Building Collapse: One Dead as Rescuers Race Against Time

One person died and six others were pulled alive from under tonnes of concrete after a 50-year-old multi-storey building collapsed in south Delhi's Satya Niketan on Sunday afternoon. The five-storey structure, which operated as a paying guest accommodation for students, caved in while repair work was underway in the basement, triggering widespread panic across the university hub and igniting a fierce political showdown over civic negligence.

National Disaster Response Force teams, alongside Delhi Fire Services and local police, rushed to the site as rescue operations continued into the evening. Search crews used heavy machinery and sniffer dogs to cut through twisted metal and concrete slabs, amid fears that several residents could still be buried underneath.

Eyewitnesses Describe Moments of Terror

The collapse shook the dense residential pocket near Delhi University's South Campus around lunchtime. Students living in neighboring PG facilities initially mistook the sudden rumble and severe tremors for a high-intensity earthquake.

"We had just finished lunch on the fourth floor when the entire structure started shaking violently," said a Delhi University student residing in an adjacent building. "Dust completely blinded the street outside. When we ran downstairs, we realised the neighboring building had crumbled. A few of us managed to pull one survivor out before emergency services reached the spot."

Local residents and student volunteers joined initial rescue efforts using their bare hands. Vinod Jakhar, National President of the National Students' Union of India, said volunteers pulled three people from the debris during the crucial minutes immediately following the collapse.

"We rushed over after hearing the noise. The dust was suffocating, and students were frantically digging through the rubble to save their peers," Jakhar said.

Political Battlelines Drawn Over Municipal Oversight

The tragedy quickly turned into a political flashpoint, with opposition parties demanding immediate accountability from civic authorities and the Delhi administration over structural safety standard enforcement across student hubs.

Congress MP Deepender Singh Hooda visited the site and questioned how a decades-old building was allowed to undergo major basement renovations while housing dozens of students.

"Who sanctioned these layout plans? Who certified the fire safety and structural stability? The Municipal Corporation of Delhi, the local administration, and the government must answer for this. You cannot let commercial PG accommodations operate without basic safety checks, risking young lives every single day," Hooda said.

Former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal termed the incident deeply alarming, calling for urgent, city-wide inspections of aging structures converted into high-density boarding houses. Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly Atishi demanded a high-level investigation into potential negligence by local inspectors and building contractors.

Mounting Pressure on Municipal Authorities

Initial investigations by Delhi Police indicate that structural alterations in the basement compromised the foundation of the 40-to-50-year-old building, causing a catastrophic domino-style collapse through all five upper levels.

The incident highlights growing concerns over unchecked structural modifications and illegal expansions in student-heavy neighborhoods like Satya Niketan, Hudson Lane, and Vijay Nagar. Municipal officials confirmed that a detailed inquiry will examine whether mandatory safety permits were obtained before starting excavation work on the property. Rescue teams remain on site to ensure no further survivors remain trapped under the debris.
