Delhi International Airport Limited has filed an FIR against 63 social media handles for circulating misleading posts depicting flooding and waterlogging at Indira Gandhi International Airport.
FIR Filed Over Misleading Social Media Posts
GMR Aero-led Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) has approached Delhi Police against 63 social media handles accused of sharing factually incorrect posts about waterlogging at Indira Gandhi International Airport.
According to DIAL, several videos and posts falsely suggested that flooding had disrupted airport operations and misrepresented the actual situation at the airport.
The airport operator said the circulation of such content could create unnecessary concern among passengers and damage public confidence in the functioning of a critical public utility.
Old Dubai Airport Video Shared As Delhi Footage
DIAL cited one social media post in which an old video showing waterlogging at Dubai Airport was allegedly presented as footage from Delhi Airport.
The airport operator said the video did not depict the prevailing conditions at IGI Airport and accused certain social media accounts of deliberately spreading misinformation.
DIAL said such posts can create public mischief, cause unnecessary alarm among passengers and wrongly suggest that airport operations have been disrupted.
Heavy Rain Caused Temporary Water Accumulation
The FIR comes days after heavy rainfall affected parts of Delhi, including the area around Terminal 3.
On September 4, the arrival forecourt of Terminal 3 witnessed temporary water accumulation following an episode of exceptionally heavy rainfall.
Delhi Airport recorded around 72.2 mm of rain within three hours between 2.30 pm and 5.30 pm that day.
Airport teams responded to the situation and cleared the accumulated water within 20 minutes, according to DIAL.
The operator said airport operations continued safely and smoothly in accordance with established procedures despite the intense rainfall.
DIAL Says Airport Operations Were Not Affected
DIAL said the temporary water accumulation at the Terminal 3 arrival forecourt did not affect airport operations.
The airport operator stressed that the situation was resolved quickly and that normal operations continued.
The clarification comes amid the rapid circulation of videos and photographs on social media, where old or unrelated visuals can be presented as current footage, potentially creating a misleading picture of conditions on the ground.
Airport Urges Passengers To Rely On Official Updates
A DIAL spokesperson said Delhi Airport serves millions of passengers and remains committed to maintaining high standards of safety and operational reliability.
The spokesperson said the temporary water accumulation following the heavy rainfall was cleared within 20 minutes and did not affect airport operations.
DIAL also urged passengers and the public to rely on the airport's official communication channels for accurate information about flight and airport operations.
The action against 63 social media handles marks a firm response from the airport operator to posts it says falsely portrayed flooding and operational disruption at IGI Airport.
