Tough to digest: Inflation makes the humble 'thali' 34% costlier
Updated: Aug 7th, 2023
The CRISIL report shows a 34% hike in the price of 'thali' in just one month |
Your humble ‘thali’ just got even more costlier, as per the CRISIL’s Roti Rice Rate (RRR) report which is the rating agency’s monthly indicator for food plate cost that was released today. The report by the global analytics company showed a steep hike in the costs involved in preparing a vegetarian ‘thali’ at home.
The data, taken from the input prices in north, south, east and west India showed that the price of the ‘thali’ at home consecutively rose in May, June, and July 2023.
Which factors lead to the rise?
For the RRR report, a thali was made by a set of particular ingredients, which included cereals, pulses, vegetables, spices, edible oil, and cooking gas. Not only the prices of these ingredients will decide the final price of the plate, but any changes in their prices will also add to the hike or a dip.
The tomato trouble
The highest price hike in the thali was seen in July, where the price of the meal plate rose to ₹33.7 from ₹26.3 in June, which is a 34% hike.. The 34% hike in the veg meal plate , can be attributed to the rising prices of tomatoes in the country.
According to the same report, the average price of tomatoes in June was ₹33/kg, which skyrocketed to ₹110/kg on an average. This is also the reason why tomatoes account for 25% of the 34% hike in the price of the vegetarian plate.
Other factors that add to the price of a thali
A hike of 16% and 9% in the prices of onions and potatoes didn’t help matters either, as they also added to the price hike.
Two minor contributors to these prices were chilli and cumin. “However, given the lower quantities of these ingredients used in a thali, their cost contribution remains lower than some of the vegetable crops,” states the report. However, astonishingly, chilli prices went up by 69%, whereas cumin hurt the pockets 16% more in July.
The only respite
Whereas most of the ingredients added to the cost, the decline in the prices of the vegetable oils was the only respite for people. The prices of vegetable oil went down by 2%, bringing down the cost ever so slightly for the thali.
