Political activity has intensified in Tamil Nadu following the 2026 Assembly election results, with superstar Vijay’s party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam emerging as the single largest party. However, despite indications of support from Indian National Congress, Vijay still faces a difficult path to forming the government.

Congress, which had contested the 2021 and 2026 elections in alliance with Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, has now reportedly passed a resolution supporting TVK. According to sources, the party may seek two cabinet berths and chairmanships of government boards in return for its backing.

After the election results, Congress leaders stated that the public mandate was clearly against the DMK government and claimed the party suffered losses despite not being directly responsible for the anti-incumbency sentiment. Congress MP Manickam Tagore pointed out on X that more than half of the state cabinet ministers had lost their seats, indicating widespread public dissatisfaction with the ruling government.

Congress has also hinted that it may align with TVK to prevent Bharatiya Janata Party from expanding its influence in Tamil Nadu.

The Tamil Nadu Assembly has 234 seats, with the majority mark set at 118.

TVK has won 108 seats

Congress has secured 5 seats

Together, their tally reaches 113 seats

Even after Congress support, Vijay still requires the backing of at least five more MLAs to claim a majority.

Complicating matters further, Vijay has won from both Perambur and Tiruchirappalli East constituencies. Under election rules, he must vacate one seat, reducing TVK’s tally to 107.

Additionally, if TVK appoints its own Speaker, the Speaker would not vote during a trust motion, effectively bringing the party’s voting strength down to 106. In such a scenario, Vijay may need support from as many as 12 additional MLAs to comfortably prove majority.

Political discussions suggest that Vijay may meet Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar on Wednesday to stake claim to form the government. If the numbers fall into place, Vijay could take oath as Chief Minister on May 7 along with nine ministers.

TVK is also believed to be in touch with parties such as VCK and Left parties to secure additional support.
