Congress demands thorough probe into ‘extortion’ case involving FM Sitharaman
Updated: Sep 30th, 2024
After a case was registered against Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on September 28, Congress leaders Jairam Ramesh and Dr Abhishek Singhvi addressed a press conference on September 29, demanding a thorough probe against the union minister.
Singhvi said, “All the agencies, all the official organs know very well how to proceed because they have been proceeding against a large number of political opponents for the 11 years prior. So, they don’t have to be told how to proceed.
“It is however very clear that this kind of bias will happen because these agencies have been controlled completely and subordinated to the will of the number one and number two and powers that be.”
“Therefore we would certainly demand a completely objective probe under the court’s control, but more importantly, ultimately supervised, either by the Supreme Court or by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Supreme Court,” he demanded.
“The Joint Parliamentary Committees (JPC) will come separately later, in fact sometimes the JPC gets into a political debate and it gets defused. We are now talking law first. The need of the hour is for the legal process started by this court order to take its course and to be supervised by the courts, both the High Court and ultimately the Supreme Court to prevent any interference, distortion or subordination,” he added.
To this, Jairam Ramesh said, “I would remind you that we had demanded an SIT of the Supreme Court on March 23, 2024. Since then, we have been demanding an SIT of the Supreme Court and as Dr Singhvi has mentioned, that remains our demand.”
“JPC is a separate demand, but as far as the Electoral Bond ‘Mahaghotala’ is concerned, particularly as it relates to the misuse of the ED, Income Tax, and CBI to threaten companies and take donations from them for the party, our demand has been consistent that there should be a Supreme Court-monitored enquiry through an SIT,” said Ramesh.
According to the FIR;
- Nirmala Sitharaman is accused number 1.
- The complaint also mentions extortion of ₹8,000 crore from the CEOs and MDs of Multi national companies (MNCs) and Transnational Corporations companies (TNCs) in the name of Electoral Bonds.
- According to media reports, the companies purchased bonds after the initial raids. Even the companies with a paid-up capital of less than ₹100 crores purchased bonds worth ₹500 crores.
