CJP Gives Delhi Police 24-Hour Ultimatum Over Jantar Mantar Protest Permission

The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) on Monday gave the Delhi Police 24 hours to respond to its request for permission to hold a protest at Jantar Mantar against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.

CJP Co-Convenor Saurav Das said the party had left the date and time of the proposed demonstration to the police but would not allow the request to remain pending indefinitely.

“Peaceful protest is a right, a constitutional right, and people are already exercising it. People will continue to hold peaceful protests. The police always complain that we should approach them 10 days in advance. This time, we have left the choice to them and asked them to suggest a date and time for our protest," Das said.

He added, "We are leaving everything to them, but we are also saying that they should not keep the matter pending indefinitely. We will give them a 24-hour ultimatum. Let us see what happens after we speak to them,” Das said.

Party Seeks Date For Peaceful Demonstration

Speaking about the proposed protest, Das said peaceful demonstrations were a constitutional right and that people would continue to exercise it.

CJP Co-Convenor Ashutosh Ranka also visited Parliament Street Police Station to seek a date for the protest. He said the party hoped the police would grant permission and would decide its next course of action within 24 hours if no date was provided.

CJP Accuses Government Of Turning Protest Into Confrontation

The ultimatum came a day after the party accused the government of being afraid of the agitation against CEC Gyanesh Kumar and claimed that the protests were turning into a confrontation with the government itself.

Addressing a press conference on Sunday, hours after a Delhi court ordered his release following preventive arrest, Ranka alleged that the country had witnessed what he described as “peak authoritarianism” over the preceding 72 hours.

He claimed that thousands of peaceful protesters seeking to demonstrate at a designated protest site had been detained across the country.

The party's latest move puts the focus on the Delhi Police's response to its request for permission to demonstrate at Jantar Mantar.
