The Centre will hand over the security of the Parliament building, one of the most important government installations, to the CISF (Central Industrial Security Force), as per a government notification dated Dec 20.

After the security breach on Dec 13, the para-military force will take over the comprehensive security of Parliament building. CISF was also notified to do the survey of the security system.

The notification read, “In pursuance of MHA’s ‘In-Principal’ approval, board for conducting joint survey of Parliament premises and its building for regular deployment of CISF security and fire wing on comprehensive pattern.”

However, security within the Parliament complex will continue to be the responsibility of the Lok Sabha secretariat.

The CISF is one of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF). As per the official website, at present the force is providing security cover to 358  industrial units, government infrastructure projects and facilities and establishments across the country. It has its own fire wing which provides services to 112 of the above establishments.

IPS Nina Singh presently serves as special director general of CISF.

The current decision comes in the wake of the Dec 13 Parliament security breach which took place on the 22nd anniversary of the 2001 Parliament terror attack. Two people on Dec 13 jumped from the visitors gallery into the Lok Sabha chamber and sprayed yellow colour smoke from canisters.

The Delhi Police have arrested six people in connection with the case and also detained two more.

Following the security breach, the Lok Sabha secretariat wrote to the ministry of home affairs for an enquiry.

The MHA ordered an enquiry of Parliament security breach under DG CRPF Anish Dayal Singh with members from other security agencies and experts.
