Centre forms Ram Nath Kovind-led panel on ‘One Nation One Election’
The central government convened a special session of Parliament from Sept 18 to 22
In a big move, the centre has constituted a committee today, headed by former president Ram Nath Kovind, to explore the possibility of ‘One Nation One Election’.
This falls ahead of the special session of parliament, which was announced by Prahlad Joshi on Aug 31.
Joshi informed on social media that the special session of parliament (the 13th session of the 17th Lok Sabha and the 261st session of the Rajya Sabha) was being called from Sept 18-22, having five sittings.
The centre has echoed this matter vociferously over the years. As the assembly polls are due in five states in November-December, followed by the Lok Sabha elections in May-June 2024, the centre structures a panel on ‘One Nation One Election’.
What is ‘One Nation One Election’?
The idea of ‘One Nation One Election’ simply aims to hold simultaneous elections across the country. As a result, elections for the Lok Sabha and all state assemblies across India will be held simultaneously, with voting taking place around the same time.
Opposition reacts
After the announcement, opposition leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury raised questions about the Modi government’s policy on the ‘One Nation One Election’ and said that the government’s intentions are not good.
Chowdhury further said that the government should focus on solving issues and problems like inflation and unemployment instead of elections.
