CBSE to scrap merit list and distinction divisions, now why
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced that it will not release the merit list or division-wise marks of students for the 2025 board exams. Continuing the trend from previous years, the board will also not publish a list of toppers or categorise students by division.
This practice of not declaring a merit list began a few years ago, with the aim of reducing unhealthy competition among students. The decision was first implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic, when results were based on marks obtained through online tests.
Earlier in March, CBSE announced that it will ban dummy students from appearing for exams.
CBSE stated that students enrolled in ‘dummy schools’ will be banned from appearing in the Class 12 board exams.
According to the new rules, students will be required to attend school regularly. If they do not meet the 75% attendance requirement or are not present during surprise school inspections conducted by the board, they will not be allowed to sit for the board exams.
What is a dummy school?
Dummy schools allow students to enroll without requiring regular attendance. These schools enable students to focus on preparing for competitive exams for medical and engineering courses. At the end of the year, students appear for the board exams.
