CBSE makes third language mandatory from class 6

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued a new circular making it compulsory for schools to teach a third language from class 6. This rule will be applied from the academic session 2026-2027. In a circular issued on April 9, the board called this step “urgent and mandatory” and asked schools to follow it within seven days.
CBSE said that many schools have already started this system, and now remaining schools must also begin immediately. Even if textbooks are not available yet, schools are not allowed to wait. They have been told to use locally available books or study materials to begin teaching the third language.
The board also instructed schools to officially inform which language they have selected. This information must be updated on the OASIS portal, and regional CBSE offices will keep a check to make sure schools are following the rule properly.
One important point is that the language chosen in class 6 will continue in classes 9 and 10. This means students will not get a new language option later. Schools have to take this decision carefully as it will affect students in the future.
This rule is based on the National Curriculum Framework 2023, which supports the three-language formula. Under this system, students learn three languages — their mother tongue or regional language, another language like English or Hindi, and one more additional language.
CBSE says the aim of this step is to improve language skills, help students understand different cultures, and build better communication. The board has clearly warned schools to take this seriously and start the process without any delay.
