The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced that it will introduce On-Screen Marking (OSM) for the evaluation of Class 12 answer books starting with the 2026 board examinations, as part of efforts to improve efficiency, transparency, and speed in the evaluation process.

According to the Board, Class 10 answer books will continue to be evaluated in physical mode in 2026, while the digital evaluation system will be implemented only for Class 12.

CBSE conducts Class 10 and Class 12 board examinations annually in India and across 26 countries, catering to nearly 46 lakh students.

The Board said the move to OSM is expected to eliminate totalling errors, reduce manual intervention through automated coordination, and enable faster evaluation with wider teacher participation. Teachers will be able to evaluate answer books remotely while continuing their regular duties at their schools. The system will also help save transportation time and costs and promote environmentally sustainable digital practices.

With the introduction of OSM, post-result verification of marks will no longer be required, significantly reducing manpower needs. CBSE also said the system will allow teachers from all affiliated schools in India and abroad to participate in the evaluation process.

To ensure readiness, schools have been asked to equip computer labs with a public static IP and systems running Windows 8 or above, at least 4 GB RAM, updated internet browsers, Adobe Reader, reliable internet connectivity of a minimum 2 Mbps, and uninterrupted power supply.

CBSE said it will facilitate smooth implementation by allowing teachers with OASIS IDs to access the system for familiarisation, conducting multiple dry runs, organising training programmes, releasing instructional videos, and setting up a dedicated call centre for issue resolution.

The Board said detailed instructions for each activity will be issued separately and urged all stakeholders to complete necessary preparations in time.
