A CBI Court in Jaipur has sentenced three former Oriental Bank of Commerce officials to seven years rigorous imprisonment for fraud involving the unauthorised release of mortgaged securities and a bank loss of over ₹12 lakh.
The court on September 18 convicted Ramji Lal Meena, then Branch Manager; Murari Lal Meena, then Special Assistant; and Than Singh Lashkar, then Peon-cum-Housekeeper at the bank’s Sheosinghpura branch in Lalsot, Dausa.
All three were sentenced to seven years of RI and fined ₹85,000 each.
Unauthorised ‘No Dues Certificates’
The CBI registered the case on February 1, 2019, following a complaint by the then Deputy General Manager of Oriental Bank of Commerce.
According to the complaint, Murari Lal Meena abused his official position by dishonestly issuing unauthorised ‘No Dues Certificates’ while serving as Special Assistant at the Sheosinghpura branch.
The certificates facilitated the release of mortgaged securities despite outstanding loan liabilities, causing a wrongful loss of ₹12,14,660.71 to the bank across three loan accounts.
After investigation, the CBI filed a chargesheet against the three accused on May 5, 2022.
Following the trial, the court convicted all three and sentenced them accordingly.
Separate Disproportionate Assets Case
In a separate case, the CBI has registered a disproportionate assets case against retired Northeast Frontier Railway Deputy Chief Engineer Sajal Kanti Das.
The CBI’s Guwahati branch alleged that Das and his wife, Sangita Das, accumulated assets worth approximately ₹88.20 lakh disproportionate to their known sources of income between 2016 and 2022.
According to the agency, the couple’s assets increased from around ₹39.85 lakh in 2016 to ₹1,28,66,946 in 2022.
The investigation identified several properties and financial holdings allegedly linked to the couple in Assam’s Cachar district.
One of the properties under scrutiny is a house valued at approximately ₹19 lakh, reportedly built on five kathas of land in Rangpur locality of Cachar district.
