Bombay High Court Sentences Tarun Tejpal to 10 Years in Jail in 2013 Sexual Assault Case

In a landmark verdict more than 12 years after the alleged incident, the Bombay High Court has convicted former Tehelka editor-in-chief Tarun Tejpal in the 2013 sexual assault case, setting aside the acquittal granted by a Goa trial court in 2021. The judgment marks a major development in one of India's most closely watched criminal cases involving workplace sexual assault.

High Court Reverses Trial Court Verdict

A division bench of the Bombay High Court allowed the Goa government's appeal against the 2021 judgment that had acquitted Tejpal of all charges.

The case arose from allegations made by a former junior colleague, who accused Tejpal of sexually assaulting her inside a lift at a five-star hotel in Goa during a Tehelka event in November 2013.

The High Court held that the trial court had erred in its appreciation of the evidence and overturned the acquittal after re-examining the material placed before it.

Sentenced to 10 Years' Rigorous Imprisonment

Following the conviction, the High Court sentenced Tarun Tejpal to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment. The court also granted him two weeks to surrender before the authorities.

Case Dates Back to 2013

The allegations relate to incidents that allegedly occurred on November 7 and 8, 2013, when the complainant accused Tejpal of sexually assaulting her inside a hotel lift during an official event organised by Tehelka in Goa.

The case triggered widespread debate on workplace safety, abuse of authority and accountability in the media industry.

Tejpal consistently denied the allegations throughout the investigation and trial.

Why Was He Acquitted Earlier?

In May 2021, a Sessions Court in Mapusa, Goa, acquitted Tejpal, holding that the prosecution had failed to prove the charges beyond reasonable doubt.

The Goa government challenged that verdict before the Bombay High Court, arguing that the trial court had misread crucial evidence, improperly assessed witness testimony and adopted an erroneous approach while evaluating the survivor's statements.

Appeal Heard After Final Arguments

The Goa bench of the Bombay High Court heard final arguments in July 2026 over several days before reserving its verdict.

During the hearings, the prosecution maintained that the complainant's testimony remained credible and that the trial court had committed serious errors while appreciating the evidence. The defence argued that the acquittal was legally justified and challenged the consistency of the prosecution's case.
