BJP reclaims Delhi after 27 years, winning 48 seats, AAP manages 22
After over a decade of Aam Aadmi Party’s reign in the 'Dilwalo Ki Dilli', BJP staged a comeback after more than 26 years, winning 48 seats in the 70-member Assembly.
As per the Election Commission of India (ECI) data, the BJP won 48 seats, and the AAP secured 22 seats and the Congress not winning a single seat.
Notably, in 2020, AAP had swept 62 out of the 70 assembly seats. The BJP improved its tally winning 8 seats, while the Congress - which had ruled the national capital between 1998 and 2013 - failed to get a single seat.
For Arvind Kejriwal, the conveyor of party that emerged from the 2013 anti-corruption movement, it was a high stakes battle that ultimately ended in disappointment.
Kejriwal lost against BJP's Parvesh Verma with the margin of 4,089 votes. Manish Sisodia, a key AAP leader also faced defeat againt BJP's Tarvinder Singh Marwah, a Congress turncoat, losing by only 600 votes.
However, Delhi Chief Minister Atishi Marlena brought some respite for AAP as she won from Kalkaji constituency by a margin of 3,500 votes against BJP's Ramesh Bidhuri.
The party which had won a thumping majority securing 67 out of 70 seats in 2015, asserted its dominance by eliminating both the Congress and the BJP, and winning 62 seats in 2020.
