BJP MP Nishikant Dubey has moved a “substantive motion” in the Lok Sabha for the cancellation of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s membership and a lifetime ban on him from contesting elections.

Dubey submitted a notice to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, accusing Rahul Gandhi of misleading the country and having links with “anti-India forces”. The BJP MP alleged that Rahul Gandhi is connected with organisations such as the George Soros Foundation, Ford Foundation and USAID.

He also questioned Gandhi’s foreign visits, claiming he meets anti-India groups during trips to countries like the US, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam.

Dubey said he wants strict action and not just suspension. He demanded that Gandhi’s membership be permanently cancelled and that he be barred from contesting elections for life.

The move comes amid heated exchanges between the BJP and Congress during the ongoing Budget Session. Rahul Gandhi has been attacking the Modi government over several issues, including the India-US trade deal, accusing it of “selling the country”. This has led to strong reactions from the ruling party.

A substantive motion is a serious and independent motion used in Parliament for major actions, such as removal from office or cancellation of membership. The final decision on whether to accept the motion now rests with Speaker Om Birla. If approved, it can be discussed and put to vote in the House.

What happens next will depend on the Speaker’s decision and further proceedings in Parliament.
