Bihar Cop Suspended After Video Shows Him Firing AK-47 At Protesting Students

The Bihar Police Department has suspended a constable in Siwan district after video footage surfaced showing him discharging an AK-47 assault rifle towards student demonstrators during a statewide shutdown call. The action from the Bihar Police Headquarters came as public outrage mounted over the high-handed police response to student-led agitation across several districts.

The incident occurred during the 'Bihar Bandh' demonstrations called by student organisations and Left groups to protest against police action on earlier student demonstrations.

Violent Clashes During Statewide Shutdown

Tensions boiled over during the statewide protest shut-down, leading to widespread disruptions and clashes between security personnel and demonstrators across multiple locations in Bihar. The agitation in Siwan turned particularly volatile, culminating in the deployment of armed personnel to control the surging crowd.

Mobile footage recorded by eyewitnesses caught the police constable brandishing and discharging his service AK-47 rifle directly aimed towards the crowd of fleeing protesters. Taking immediate cognizance of the viral clip and the grave violation of crowd-control protocols, the Bihar Police Headquarters ordered the constable's swift suspension pending an official inquiry into the discharge of automatic weaponry against civilians.

Three Injured Protesters Stable in Patna

The escalating violence left several individuals injured, with three key victims currently receiving treatment at Jayprabha Medanta Hospital in Patna. Medical authorities confirmed that the condition of all three injured individuals remains stable following surgical interventions.

Among those admitted is 15-year-old Md Arif, who sustained a gunshot wound to the neck. According to his family, Arif works at a local establishment and was simply attempting to head home after closing the shop for the bandh when he was caught in the crossfire. Doctors successfully extracted the bullet during an emergency procedure, confirming his vital signs are stable.

Police Headquarters Pledges Strict Action

Addressing the fallout, senior police officials underscored that while maintaining public order remains the primary duty of the force, any breach of standard operating procedures will invite strict disciplinary consequences.

The suspension marks an immediate measure as state authorities review police conduct during the bandh, with senior commanders reiterating that automatic rifles are strictly prohibited for routine crowd management.
