Bihar Board To Replace ‘Fail’ On Marksheets With ‘Eligible For Skill Training’

The Bihar government has decided to remove the word “Fail” from the marksheets of students appearing for Class 10 and Class 12 examinations conducted by the Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB), state Education Minister Mithilesh Tiwari said on Friday. Students who do not clear the exams will instead have “Eligible for Skill Training” mentioned on their marksheets.

New option for students who fail board exams

According to Tiwari, the new terminology will allow students to pursue vocational training programmes through the Bihar Board of Open Schooling and Examination (BBOSE).

“The Education Department will soon issue the necessary directives in this regard,” Tiwari said, adding that failure in an examination should not be treated as a reflection of a student’s ability or talent.

The initiative has already received approval from Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary.

The minister said a student may fail an examination for several reasons, while their talent could emerge at a later stage. The decision to remove the word “Fail” is aimed at reducing the stigma associated with examination results and encouraging students to explore alternative learning and career pathways.

Month-long classes for supplementary exam students

The Education Department will also conduct month-long special classes for students appearing for the matriculation supplementary examination.

The classes are intended to provide additional preparation and academic support to help students improve their performance in the supplementary exams.

BBOSE offers vocational learning route

The Bihar Board of Open Schooling and Examination (BBOSE) was established in 2011 as an autonomous organisation under the state Education Department. It was set up to provide students with opportunities to continue their education and develop skills through alternative learning pathways.

Under the proposed marksheet change, students who do not clear their board examinations can use the “Eligible for Skill Training” status to explore such vocational options.

‘Vidya Saathi’ app connects students with teachers

The Bihar government has also launched the “Vidya Saathi” app for students of Classes 9 to 12. The platform is designed to connect students with teachers for academic support around the clock.

Around 75,000 teachers are expected to provide one-on-one academic assistance through the platform.

Meanwhile, the state government is preparing to launch a Teacher Support Portal on September 5, which is observed as Teachers’ Day in India. The government also plans to honour one teacher from each district as part of the initiative.
