A shocking case of bank theft has come to light after an employee of India Bank was arrested for allegedly stealing nearly 2.7 kg of gold jewellery from customer lockers to pay for his online betting and gambling activities, as per reports.

According to reports, the accused, identified as 34-years-old Kiran Kumar, was working as an assistant manager at a bank branch in Bengaluru. Police reportedly said he misused his official access to locker keys and slowly removed small amounts of gold over the theft when the branch manager was absent so that no one would notice.

The crime was discovered on January 2, when several customers came to the bank to collect their pledged jewellery. During a routine verified process, bank staff found something suspicious. A detailed check revealed that gold ornaments were packets, while three packets were completely empty.

According to preliminary investigation, around 2,783 grams of gold, worth nearly ₹4 crore, had been  stolen. Police said the accused sold the jewellery in different places and used the money to cover heavy losses from online gambling and betting.

Police are now working to recover the stolen gold and are also checking whether any other person was involved in the case.
