Assam BJP Cabinet Minister Ashok Singhal has sparked outrage on social media and among opposition parties after he posted about “Gobi farming” on X, writing “Bihar approves Gobi farming,” shortly after the NDA’s massive victory in Bihar.

The outrage stems from the phrase “Gobi farming,” which is associated with the 1989 Bhagalpur communal riots, where hundreds of Muslims were killed. Their bodies were allegedly buried in fields, and cauliflower was planted over the burial sites to hide the evidence. Since then, “Gobi farming” has been used as a grim reference to what is known as the Logain Massacre.

Following Singhal’s post, the opposition accused the BJP of celebrating or endorsing the mass killings of Muslims. Some leaders further alleged that the Modi government, along with the ruling government in Bihar, ‘approves’ violence against Muslims or intends to drive them out of the state.

The post has triggered concerns about the potential rise of communal tensions in the region.

Lawyer and activist Sanjay Hegde criticised the Assam minister’s post, stating, “This is incitement to communal slaughter. You, sir, do not speak for me or for most Indians. You are violating your constitutional oaths and are unworthy of the high office you hold.”
