Delhi Police detained the parents of Ankita Bhandari and several Congress leaders during an early-morning crackdown on their overnight protest at India Gate in New Delhi on Thursday. The family was demanding that the government cancel Dushyant Kumar Gautam’s appointment as Sikkim governor.

The parents were detained at around 4 am and released hours later, around 5 am, according to reports. The protest was held against Gautam’s appointment amid allegations by the family linking him to the alleged VIP angle in Ankita’s 2022 murder case.

Congress Leaders Also Detained During Protest

Several Congress leaders, including party media and publicity department head Pawan Khera, social media department head Supriya Shrinate and Indian Youth Congress chief Uday Bhanu Chib, were also detained and later released.

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had visited the protest site on Wednesday to meet Ankita’s parents and express solidarity with their demand.

Congress leaders criticised the police action, alleging that protesters seeking justice for Ankita were being targeted.

Ankita’s Father Issues 24-Hour Ultimatum

Following their detention and release, Ankita’s parents reiterated their demand for the cancellation of Gautam’s appointment.

“We give a 24-hour ultimatum to the government for the cancellation of Dushyant’s appointment. Nationwide protests will be launched if the government does not accept our demand,” Ankita’s father reportedly said.

The family has demanded that Gautam’s appointment be put on hold until the Central Bureau of Investigation completes its probe into the alleged VIP angle in the case.

What Is the Ankita Bhandari Murder Case?

Ankita, 19, worked as a receptionist at Vanantra Resort in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, when she was murdered on September 18, 2022.

Resort owner Pulkit Arya, son of former BJP leader Vinod Arya, and two accomplices, resort manager Saurabh Bhaskar and assistant manager Ankit Gupta, were convicted in the case.

The family has alleged that an unidentified VIP was linked to the crime and has named Gautam in connection with that allegation. The allegations against Gautam remain unproven.
