Viral Video Triggers Outrage Across Northeast
The purported video, which circulated widely on social media, showed Shokeen allegedly making racially derogatory remarks against a young man from Tripura. The incident drew strong condemnation from political leaders and organisations across the Northeast, with demands for action against the content creator.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha directed the state's Director General of Police (DGP) to coordinate with Delhi Police over the matter.
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju also condemned the alleged conduct and vowed that action would be taken against Shokeen.
"This evil man will be punished. There was a delay in lodging the official complaint, but Delhi Police and Tripura Police will teach him a hard lesson," Rijiju said.
He added that people who tolerate such behaviour in society were also responsible for allowing hatred to spread.
Amir Shokeen Claims Video Was Scripted
Amid mounting criticism, Shokeen released an apology video on Wednesday, claiming that the controversial clip was scripted and that the man featured in it was known to him.
According to Shokeen, the man had previously worked at a friend's cafe in Ahmedabad. He claimed the exchange was intended as a humorous video in which both men were joking and denied having any intention of insulting anyone.
"I apologise with folded hands if I hurt anyone. It was not my intention. I love and respect everyone," Shokeen said in the video.
The apology came as the controversy continued to draw political and public attention.
The BJP has also claimed that Shokeen is associated with the Congress.
Delhi Police Reach Shokeen's Residence
A Delhi Police team reached Shokeen's residence in the national capital on Thursday morning as the search for him continued. He has reportedly been on the run since the video sparked widespread backlash.
Meanwhile, political parties in Tripura, including the CPI(M), Congress and Tipra Motha Party (TMP), have strongly condemned the reported incident and demanded action against the content creator.
Two youth and student organisations affiliated with the TMP have also filed police complaints in Agartala over the allegedly racist video targeting a youth from Tripura and containing derogatory remarks.
The controversy has triggered demands for accountability, with political leaders and organisations calling for action over the alleged racial abuse.
