Amethi: Smriti Irani concedes defeat as KL Sharma retains Gandhi-family bastion
Updated: Jun 4th, 2024
In a shocking turn of events, BJP union minister Smriti Irani was defeated by Congress candidate Kishori Lal Sharma from Amethi by more than 1.65 lakh votes.
Irani lagged behind Sharma in the earliest trends.
The selection of Sharma as Congress candidate, pitted against union minister Irani in Amethi had kicked up a storm of sorts in political circles with many claiming that the Congress has already conceded defeat.
Sharma, however, was unfazed.
“I have been working as a coordinator in Amethi and Raebareli since 1983. My relationship with the local people spans over four decades. I am honoured to be asked to contest the seat that belongs to the Gandhi family,” he said, talking to agencies ahead of going into polls.
Kishori Lal Sharma belongs to Bhawanipur, a village in Himachal Pradesh.
Sharma is tasked with securing snatching Amethi from BJP after a disheartening defeat in 2019.
‘Seva sau saalon ka, rishta pidiyon ka’ (100 years of Seva and ties dating back generations) was also the party’s punchline for wooing and winning the support of the electorate in these family bastions.
Rahul Gandhi had also tweeted, “Amethi and Raebareli are not just Lok Sabha seats for us but also our karmabhoomi. Whenever the residents of these constituencies remember us, we will be right there.”
