In a groundbreaking step, 85-year-old H B Karibasamma, a retired government school teacher from Karnataka, has reportedly become the first beneficiary in the state of the right to die with dignity. This development follows a landmark circular issued by the Karnataka government on January 30, allowing terminally ill patients to choose a dignified death.

For over 30 years, Karibasamma endured a slipped disc pain and is now battling cancer, as per reports. Despite her health struggles, she has spent the past 24 years campaigning for the right to a dignified death, sending numerous petitions to political leaders, including the chief minister, prime minister, president, and the Supreme Court of India.

Although India legalised passive euthanasia in 2018, Karnataka’s implementation of the right to die with dignity came recently last month. State Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao clarified that this provision applies solely to patients on life support who are unresponsive to treatment and should not be confused with euthanasia.

Despite being estranged from her extended family, Karibasamma hopes her struggle will inspire others facing terminal illnesses to find peace and dignity.
