26/11 Mumbai Attacks conspirator confirmed dead by UN Security Council

An Indian most wanted for training the attackers of 26/11, Hafiz Abdul Salam Bhuttavi, who was also a founding member of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and a close aide to Hafiz Saeed has died.

Confirmation of death seven months later

Bhuttavi’s death was confirmed by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). According to the UNSC summary, Bhuttawi died of a heart attack on May 29, 2023, in Muridke, Punjab province while in the custody of the government of Pakistan.


Hafiz Saeed’s deputy

According to information on the UNSC website, Bhuttawi took over the organisation of Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jamaat-ud-Dawa when Hafiz Saeed was detained.

Hafiz Saeed was under house arrest from Nov 2008 and remained in custody until June 2009. During this period, Bhuttawi handled the day-to-day operations of the organisation and took independent decisions on behalf of the organisation.
