2 US nationals detained at Srinagar airport for carrying banned satellite phone

A significant security alert was reported at Srinagar International Airport in Jammu and Kashmir after security personnel detained two US nationals for carrying a prohibited satellite phone during screening.
According to officials, the incident came to light when the two foreign nationals were preparing to depart and their luggage was scanned at the airport. During the security check, a satellite phone was detected, prompting immediate action by security agencies.
In India, possession or use of satellite phones is strictly regulated and generally prohibited for civilians and tourists without prior government permission. The rules are enforced more stringently in sensitive regions like Jammu and Kashmir due to security concerns.
Following the recovery of the device, the satellite phone was seized and both individuals were handed over to the local police. Authorities have launched a detailed interrogation to determine the purpose of carrying the device and whether the individuals were aware of Indian regulations.
Officials indicated that the Ministry of External Affairs and the concerned embassy may also be informed as part of the protocol. Satellite phones are restricted in India to prevent potential misuse in activities such as terrorism or espionage.
Further investigation into the matter is currently underway.
