The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has filed 193 cases against serving and former politicians, including MPs, MLAs, and MLCs, over the past 10 years. However, the agency has secured just two convictions from these cases, according to information provided by the Union government in Parliament on Tuesday.
In a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary disclosed that while the ED had investigated politicians and political party affiliates for alleged financial crimes, only two cases, one in 2016-17 and the other in 2019-20, resulted in convictions.
The records reportedly indicate that former Jharkhand ministers Hari Narayan Rai and Anosh Ekka were among those convicted. Rai was sentenced to seven years of rigorous imprisonment and fined ₹5 lakh in 2017, while Ekka received a similar sentence and ₹2 crore fine in 2020. Both cases were part of a money-laundering probe tied to former Jharkhand chief minister Madhu Koda. It is unclear if either convicted politician has filed an appeal against the verdicts, as per reports.
The data also revealed that the highest number of cases 32 was filed by the ED during the 2022-23 fiscal year.
